Bland diets are those diets with are low on acidity and where the seasoning is minimal. However, when you opt for this type of diet, you could feel that your choices are limited. This is not exactly true because according to many experts, bland diets need necessarily be tasteless or having very little taste.
What Foods Are Allowed On A Bland Diet?
But they certainly are diets which are not likely to irritate the gastrointestinal tract. In fact the GI tract includes almost every part of the human anatomy starting from the mouth to the anus. Bland diets food includes items from different parts of the food pyramid.
However, it is important to avoid high fiber foods, and foods that are rich and salt and sugar. It should also avoid aggressive seasonings such as mustard, pepper, horseradish, butter and cream. You should also try and stay away from food that may cause digestive discomfort when you are following a bland diet.
Meat and Proteins
When you are choosing meats and proteins as part of bland diets, you should go for low fat options such as scrambled eggs, peanut butter with turkey.
When going in for fish you should opt for shellfish or whitefish over salmon and other such fishes. It is better to grill or steam poultry and fish rather than fry it.
Tofu is a good option of bland diet for vegetarian dishes.
You should stay away from spicy condiments, hot sauces and barbecue sauce when you are on a bland diet.
Fruits and Vegetables
Fruits, juices and vegetables should be made a part of your bland diet.
A few examples are apple sauce, bananas, and canned peaches.
You should try and avoid citrus fruits and juices and also berries of any type because they can irritate your GI tract. It is better to go in for cooked or canned or frozen vegetables over raw ones.
If you wish to go in for mashed potato, the cream or butter content should only be very small. It is better to stay away from tomato and vegetables that produce gas such as cabbage, green pepper, corn or broccoli.
Cereals and Grains
It is better to use white bread over whole grain when it comes to sandwiches. Refined hot cereals such as oatmeal and cream of wheat should be used more extensively. Use water instead of milks when you prepare them. You can enjoy pasta and bulgur provided it does not contain any added fat but is made with moderate amounts of olive oil.
When you choose dairy products, opt for low fat items such as skim milk, low fat yogurt or non-fat cottage cheese. Enjoy nonfat ice cream as desserts and moderate intake of pudding and custard.
Drink lot of water and avoid caffeine to the extent possible. Broth is a good hot beverage. Stay away from alcohol, mint teas, hot cocoa and chocolate milk.
